To study abroad, you have to register depending on your plans and answer a few international entrance exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, MCAT, and GRE etc. These exams are required for the admission process to get into top foreign universities.
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) –
International English Language Testing System is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non- native English language speakers. It is co-owned by British Council, IDP – IELTS Australia and Cambridge University. IELTS band score is required for study, work or migration to the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US. IELTS is the only secure English language test (SELT) approved by the UK government. From 2018, IELTS exam fee administrated is Rs.12, 650. There are up to 48 test dates available every year. Each test centre offers tests up to four times a month. IELTS has a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency; half scores such as 7.5 are also possible. You get an overall band score for your whole test. This score is the average of your IELTS scores. The IELTS band score is valid for two years.
Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) –
Test of English as a foreign language measures ones’ English language abilities. TOEFL is required if you want to study in foreign universities or work in the international market and find better work opportunities in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada and Australia. From 2018, exam fee administered for TOEFL iBT is Rs.10, 800 -16,800 and for TOEFL PBT is Rs.12, 200. There are up to 35 cities in the country that administers TOEFL. The highest score in the TOEFL is 120 and is valid for two years.
Graduate management admission test (GMAT) –
Graduate management admission test is required for admission to most business schools. The GMAT consists of a 30-minute analytical writing section with one essay, a 30-minute integrated reasoning section, a 62-minute quantitative section and a 65-minute verbal section. The overall GMAT score ranges from 200 to 800 in 10-point increments. Many countries accept the scores for admission purpose. From 2018, the exam fee administrated is Rs.17, 161. The GMAT scores are valid for five years.
Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) –
Medical College Admissions Test is a multiple-choice test that evaluates the examinee’s aptitude and knowledge about relevant subjects. This test is required for the admission into undergraduate courses in the U.S medical schools. It is administered by American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is accepted by the countries such as the US, Canada, and Australia. Each test centre offers tests up to 25 times a year. There are no test centres in India. Hence, you will have to go to neighboring countries such as Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore to sit for the exam. The exam fee administered from 2018 is Rs.25, 750. MCAT score is valid for 2-3 years.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) –
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that measures the verbal, mathematical and general analytical skills of the candidate aspiring to study in the US or Canada. The verbal and quantitative section is scored at the scale of 130 to 170 in 1-point increments, and the analytical writing is scored from 0 to 6 score level in half-point increments. There are about 1,000 test centres in over 160 countries. The fee administered from 2018 for the GRE general test is Rs.14, 091 and for the GRE subject test is Rs. 10,311. The exam score is valid for five years.
